This small sketch of an embracing couple and some birds was made with pencil by Niels Larsen Stevns. Here, the process of making art is front and centre. It's all about the raw, unfiltered energy of the first idea. Look closely, and you'll notice how Stevns captures the figures with minimal lines. The embrace is suggested rather than fully defined, leaving space for our imagination to fill in the gaps. The texture of the paper adds a tactile quality to the sketch, making it feel immediate and intimate. Those birds, dashed in the corner, are a fleeting thought, barely there. But it's that lightness, that sense of something just passing through, that makes this sketch so special. Stevns reminds me of Paula Modersohn-Becker, another artist who wasn't afraid to leave things open-ended, unresolved. Art is a conversation across time. It’s about the questions, not just the answers.
