This is a page of studies of arms and partial figures by Niels Larsen Stevns. It's just pencil on paper, quick and to the point, the kind of thing you do when you’re trying to figure something out. Look at the upper arm on the right. It’s there and not there, just a few lines describe its shape, but they’re so sure, so confident. It’s like Stevns is feeling his way around the form, trying to understand the structure beneath the skin. You can almost feel the movement in his hand as he draws, a real sense of immediacy. These studies remind me of Delacroix’s drawings, that same energy and interest in the human form. It's all about the process, the act of seeing and translating that to paper. Art isn't about answers; it's about asking questions.
