Soledad Sevilla made this untitled piece using what looks like graphite and maybe a very pale wash. The mark making feels methodical, almost like a meditation. Repetition of lines and shapes creates a subtle rhythm, but the imperfections keep it from feeling too rigid. It's like seeing a carefully planned garden that has been just a little bit overgrown. The use of subtle textures and almost-there colors is interesting. The graphite lines are so delicate, and the washes so pale, they create a sense of depth and movement on the surface. Look at the way the lines vary in thickness and pressure. It’s not perfect, it’s kind of wobbly, which gives it a human touch, something you don’t always find in geometric abstraction. It makes me think of Agnes Martin, but with a bit more give. Ultimately, this piece reminds me that art is always a conversation. It’s about seeing what others have done, responding to it, and making something new.
