This work was created by Romeyn de Hooghe, around the late 17th century. It is made of two sheets of paper, glued together. The drawing depicts horizontal lists with ornaments of oak leaves and acorns. The immediate visual experience is one of repetition and order, as parallel lists dominate the composition. However, this regularity is disrupted by the organic forms of the oak leaves and acorns, creating a dynamic tension between the structured layout and the naturalistic details. The texture is complex with the variations in shading and the fine lines used to depict the leaves. We can think about how the work challenges the conventional relationship between representation and reality. The drawing is not merely a depiction of nature, but a carefully constructed pattern that invites us to consider the underlying structures that inform our perception of the natural world. The artist uses the semiotic system of leaves and acorns to create a larger ornamental code.
