Marina Pallares made this painting, "Arlés in deep sleep" with what looks like graphite on canvas. It depicts a curled up cat sleeping in the dark amongst colorful confetti-like sprinkles. I love the way the artist has balanced realism with the abstract background. The soft rendering of the cat invites you into a quiet space of rest and contemplation. I can imagine Pallares, patiently building up the layers of graphite, almost whispering the cat into existence. The gesture of the curled body speaks of warmth and security. It's interesting to think about how she might have been thinking about other artists like Balthus or Delacroix, who were also fascinated by the sensuality of cats, whilst imbuing the image with her unique perspective. The cat becomes a motif in her own exploration of form, light, and emotion.
