This newspaper clipping, made in Alkmaar, Netherlands, on May 6th, 1945, is all about the end of the war. It’s an "Extra Editie" of the "Morgen Bulletin," reporting on Alkmaar's reaction to the capitulation. The typeface is blocky, functional, not fancy. The layout is dense, packed with words. You can almost feel the urgency and excitement in the air. It’s like a collective exhale after years of oppression. The writer describes how the Dutch people celebrated their freedom by raising flags, singing, dancing, and decorating the streets with flowers and orange ribbons. Look at the bottom, the announcement regarding food, dropped from the sky by American bombers. What a feeling that must have been! This clipping feels like a cousin to the Situationist manifestos of the 60's and 70's. A call to action and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, art and joy can persist.
