"The Nativity" is a terracotta relief sculpture created by an anonymous artist in c. 1465. This work, housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, depicts the traditional scene of the birth of Jesus Christ. The Virgin Mary, clothed in red, is seated and gently cradles the newborn Jesus. Joseph, the traditional figure in the scene, is shown sleeping at the foot of the nativity scene, his head resting on his hand. The ox and ass, symbols of humility, flank the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. The high-relief style of the sculpture contributes to its strong sense of three-dimensionality. This piece is a valuable example of Italian Renaissance art, offering a glimpse into the era's religious devotion and artistic innovation.
