Philipp Rumpf made this drawing, Figuren in einer Landschaft, using graphite on paper. The unassuming nature of the materials – pencil and paper – invites us to think about the speed and simplicity of mark making. The artist’s hand is immediately evident in the varying line weights and densities of shading, which suggest a scene captured in a fleeting moment. The very immediacy of the graphite, its capacity to capture the artist’s passing thoughts, gives the artwork a certain character. This drawing is not a highly finished work, it’s more of a sketch, where the artist is working out his ideas, thinking through the act of drawing. It is through the artist's hand that we see the image, and through the artist's choices about materials and techniques that we understand its full meaning.
