Moon Pil Shim created this untitled artwork as part of an ongoing process of inquiry through painting. I imagine he made it by shifting and emerging, via trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with Shim. What might it have been like to create a grid-like structure, with a rainbow of colors including pink, orange, yellow, and green? Some of the panels are colorful and have lines. Other panels are gray with splatters. The paint is thin, and the surface creates intellectual and emotional resonances. The lines communicate feelings of intention and meaning. This piece may relate to the work of other painters who use grids. Ultimately, artists are in an ongoing conversation. They exchange ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is a form of embodied expression that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty. This allows for multiple interpretations.
