Jean Marie Delattre created this print titled "Nacht." The scene teems with intimate domesticity: a family gathers indoors, the father with a gesture silencing his children, the mother holding a child in her arms, a sleeping dog at her feet, and a blazing fire in the hearth, all symbols laden with cultural meaning. The hearth, especially, is an ancient symbol that has appeared in different times and places, of warmth, security, and family unity. From the Vestal Virgins tending the sacred flame in ancient Rome, to the bonfires of Walpurgis Night, fire is a motif with a life of its own. The gesture of silence, too, connects to a rich history, such as the depiction of Harpocrates, the god of silence, which became a symbol for esoteric knowledge. These symbols tap into our collective memory, engaging the viewer on a subconscious level. Note how the fire draws the eye, the warmth of the domestic sphere contrasted with the silence imposed. This is how symbols are not linear but cyclical: they resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings, always retaining a trace of their origins.
