Curatorial notes
Johann Peter Berghaus created this portrait of an unknown man with pencil on paper, during a period when Europe was experiencing significant social and political change. The subject is portrayed with a sense of reserved confidence. He is neatly dressed in a suit and bow tie which suggests a man of means and social standing. Portraits like this offered a way to visualize one’s identity and status in a rapidly evolving society. During the 19th century, class distinctions were visibly reinforced through fashion and portraiture conventions. Although this portrait reflects the dominant aesthetic of its time, representing conventional ideas about masculinity and social status, there’s a certain stillness in the man’s eyes. We are left to wonder about his inner thoughts and personal narrative. Berghaus’s portrait gives us an intimate glimpse into the life of an individual. It also reflects broader themes of identity, class, and representation in 19th-century European society.
