Alfred Freddy Krupa made this ink drawing, ‘In Zagreb’, on paper, and it feels like a map of a memory. The black ink loops and dives across the white ground, and it's the kind of drawing where the artist seems to be feeling their way through space. Look closely, and you’ll see how the ink pools and thins, revealing Krupa’s hand moving across the page. The lines build up a sense of place, like the echo of buildings and structures. There’s a nervous energy here, a sense of urgency in the way the ink is applied, and it reminds me of Cy Twombly’s scribbled cityscapes, full of raw emotion. But where Twombly sprawls, Krupa focuses, creating a dense network of lines which hold both an architectural and emotional space. It’s about suggestion rather than description, about feeling rather than seeing. And like all good drawings, it leaves space for us to bring our own experiences.
