This is C.G. Pilo's "Studie til et portræt, formentlig af A. G. Moltke" created with an unknown medium. Pilo was born in Denmark, and later became a Swedish court painter. This portrait study gives us a glimpse into the visual culture of 18th century European aristocracy. The identity of the sitter is still uncertain, but it might be A. G. Moltke, an influential courtier. The powdered wig, the elaborate drapery, the suggestion of fine fabric – all speak to a world of privilege and power. Yet, Pilo’s sketch also has an immediacy. The somewhat unfinished quality of the sketch opens a space for us to consider the individual behind the trappings of status. What does it mean to try and capture the likeness of a person, especially one so enmeshed in the machinery of courtly life? It prompts us to think about the emotional and personal dimensions of portraiture, beyond representation of social standing.
