Editor: Here we have David Knox's "Mortar Dictator, In Front of Petersburg." It's quite striking. The sheer size of the mortar juxtaposed with the figures really gives you a sense of power and control. What historical narratives do you feel are at play here? Curator: The photograph’s brutal, industrial aesthetic is certainly powerful. We must consider how this image functions as a form of propaganda, normalizing the violence of war. How does understanding the context of the Civil War, specifically the siege of Petersburg, affect your interpretation? Editor: Knowing it's from the Civil War, it's difficult not to think about the human cost. Curator: Exactly. This image, while appearing to document military might, also silences the voices of those most affected by this "dictator," namely, the enslaved population and the soldiers themselves. It presents a very skewed narrative. Editor: It's a chilling reminder of how images can be used to obscure the true cost of conflict. Curator: Indeed. And how crucial it is to critically examine the stories they tell, and those they deliberately omit.
