Editor: Well, reliefs like these operate almost as visual mnemonics, encoding stories within their forms. Each gesture, posture, object holds layers of meaning for those familiar with the teachings and history of Buddhism. And those recurring characters create an impression of fate and purpose. Curator: Yes, precisely. There is this powerful emotional undercurrent, subtly drawn figures that guide us from one scene to the next in a deeply personal way. There is much focus around Siddhartha as this almost supernaturally benevolent individual and as such there's much interest in depicting that through art like this. What do you think about that? Editor: This artistic idealization reveals much about our need to understand the past but also imbue a subject with aspirational virtues – it speaks to the psychology of historical memory, doesn't it? We seek echoes of those qualities we yearn for. The choice of sculpture as a medium amplifies this reverence, suggesting permanence, longevity and timelessness. Curator: Kinsbergen’s photographic capture preserves this history beautifully, especially regarding the sculptural style itself which uses very traditional methods of production. I find myself curious of those people, those characters surrounding our protagonist. Editor: Indeed. Those individuals are more than just figures, but carry a complex layering that tells the story. What else did you learn or feel during the observation?
