Editor: Here we have a drawing by George Chinnery, from the Tate Collections, of a rocky landscape. It’s incredible how much texture he creates with so few washes. What stands out to you about this piece? Curator: I’m interested in how Chinnery’s materials – paper, ink, and brush – mediate his representation of the landscape. Notice how the layering of washes mimics the geological stratification of the rocks. What labor was involved in sourcing the materials? How accessible were they? Editor: That's interesting. It makes me think about the role of the artist as both observer and manufacturer. Thanks for your perspective! Curator: Indeed! Considering the means of production invites us to challenge assumptions about artistic genius and to appreciate the work's materiality.
