Jason Limon gave us this painting called 'Elegance' sometime in the 20th century; it's a piece that really gets under your skin. I can imagine Limon at work; first, laying down the textured ground, then building up the layers and patterns, then introducing the skeleton, and then standing back to survey the strange figure that has come into being. I love the muted palette with a touch of grey and blue. Then there's that gesture of the letters; you can almost feel him placing each one, trying to figure out the puzzle of the whole. It's not about getting it right, but about discovering something new in the process. 'Elegance' reminds me of outsider art. There's a kind of visual language that feels raw and intuitive. These works are not aiming for perfection, but for something more authentic, more human. And for me, that's where the real beauty lies.
