Jason Limon’s painting, "Outlines," from this year, has all these lovely layers and colours, it almost reminds me of a folded mille-feuille pastry. I imagine Limon building up the composition step by step: a layer of ochre, then a layer of green, and another of red, deciding when to apply the lettering and stars. The paint is so thin that it allows each layer to speak for itself. There’s a feeling of precision and planning, but also spontaneity in the way the colours and shapes interact. It’s almost like a conversation the artist is having with himself. And the skeletal figures! They bring a touch of playfulness and irony. Is this Limon's way of contemplating the great masters and infusing his work with his unique take on humanity? Maybe! I find it’s a conversation, not a declaration. Artists build on the past, adding their voices to a never-ending dialogue. Painting is embodied expression, a place for ambiguity, and an invitation for everyone to bring their own interpretations.
