Sally Gabori made this painting, Thundi, with paint on canvas. The colours are striking; the bright red background immediately pulls you in. Then your eyes start dancing between the strokes of white, purple, and turquoise. It’s like a symphony of colour, each stroke a note contributing to the overall feeling. Looking closely, you can see the texture of the paint – thick in some places, almost transparent in others. It gives the painting a real sense of depth and physicality. Notice that bold, diagonal stroke of white. It's confident, assertive, and the way it cuts across the red reminds me of a similar gesture in Joan Mitchell's work, even though their worlds are so different. Gabori's paintings remind me that art is a language, and like any language, it's constantly evolving. Each artist builds on what came before, adding their own unique voice to the conversation.
