Sally Gabori made 'Thundi' with big sweeping gestures of paint. I imagine her starting with that field of red, maybe thinking of the land, then slashing through it with those streaks of white and pale blue, like clouds or surf breaking. There's a rawness to the application, the paint laid on thick in places, thin in others, letting the texture of the surface come through. The colours aren't mixed so much as placed side by side - that turquoise against the magenta creates a real buzz. It’s like Gabori is feeling her way through the painting, responding to each mark as it appears. You know? Like one bold stroke inspires the next, and the whole thing builds up in layers of colour and movement. Artists are always in conversation, you know? It's a process of call and response that stretches across time. Each painting a moment of embodied expression.
