These candlesticks of unknown date and maker were fashioned out of silver. Though utilitarian, objects such as these are deeply embedded within cultural practices. Consider the way candlelight shapes a domestic space, casting shadows and creating ambiance. Before electric lights, candlelight held sway over social interactions, dictating when and how people gathered. Imagine these candlesticks illuminating a dining table. Who is present? What class do they belong to? What conversations take place under their glow? Although beautiful, these objects bear witness to human history and social rituals. They prompt us to think about how we have used light to mark special occasions and the narratives of identity they can reflect. Candlesticks, like these, prompt us to consider the stories of both illumination and shadow.
