Gazmend Freitag made "Angi" with oil paint on canvas. Just looking at the loose brushstrokes and the way the figure emerges from the background, I get a real sense of the artist figuring things out as they go. Like each stroke is a question, a “what if?” I imagine Freitag, brush in hand, circling the canvas, maybe stepping back to squint, then diving in again with another layer. You can almost feel the push and pull, the give and take, between intention and accident. The black dress looks like it was painted quickly, with just a few strokes. It’s interesting how the artist's marks are confident and free, and the red strokes add a certain drama to the painting. It makes me think about how all paintings are an experiment in seeing, where the artist shows us not just what they see but how they see it. It's like they are in dialogue with artists from the past, like a modern day Manet. It shows how painting keeps evolving with artists discovering new things about themselves and the world through the act of creation.
