Kateryna Lysovenko made this painting, Resurrection, with oil. The way Lysovenko builds up the paint is interesting. It's almost sculptural in places, thick with visible brushstrokes, and elsewhere, it’s thinned down, more transparent. The contrast in textures really makes the figure come alive, like she’s emerging from the canvas itself. I'm drawn to the way she's rendered the right arm and hand, which fade into this sort of atmospheric mist on the right, that is a very nice detail. It gives the figure a sense of emergence, like she is appearing out of something. Lysovenko reminds me of Paula Modersohn-Becker, who was also interested in depicting female figures with a kind of raw intensity. Art is an ongoing conversation, and Lysovenko brings her own unique voice to this dialogue. There's room for different interpretations, so let the image speak to you.
