Daniel Buren made this thing, using bright orange, black, and white shapes to rearrange our perception of space. It’s all about simple geometry; a circle and four triangles sitting on the wall, but it’s also a game. Look at how the light bounces off the glossy surfaces, giving the piece a playful, almost cartoonish vibe. The orange is so clean, so flat, it feels like a screen print. The black and white stripes that run along the edges are almost like outlines, anchoring the shapes in space. Buren's work often messes with our sense of perspective, and this piece is no exception. He's inviting us to question how we see, and to recognize that art can be both simple and conceptually dense. This reminds me a little of Ellsworth Kelly, in the way that he makes pared-down forms sing. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most interesting art asks more questions than it answers.
