Lorser Feitelson made ‘Magical Space Forms’ with what looks like oils, using blocks of colour in such a way that its hard to tell what is figure and what is ground, which, when I am painting, is always the goal. The flat grey and orange create a push-pull relationship, with neither colour dominating, which makes the shapes really dance in your eye. I love how the edges of the shapes are so crisp, almost machine-like, which contrasts with the warmth of the colours. In the upper left corner, there's a soft curve of grey which almost reads as an eclipse, or an opening into another dimension. I find myself comparing Feitelson’s forms to those of Carmen Herrera; their visual vocabularies speak to the same interest in abstraction. I guess art is just a way of embracing uncertainty, inviting us to linger in the unknown.
