"Ship in Rough Water" is a 17th-century print by the Dutch artist Hercules Segers. Segers, who was known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, has created a powerful, if small, depiction of a ship caught in a violent storm. Segers is considered a master of etching, which is a printmaking technique using a sharp needle to cut lines into a metal plate. The print is currently held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

This little ship in a vast swirling sea is printed in light ink on a dark ground. As a result the atmosphere of this etching differs entirely from the rest of this maritime ensemble.
