Kinder Album made this program for a jazz concert in Kyiv, using watercolor and ink to bring this centaur musician to life. The rainbow arcing over her head sets a whimsical tone, and the careful linework gives her a delicate, dreamlike quality. Looking closely, the washes of color are thin and transparent, allowing the paper's texture to peek through. It's interesting how the brown of the horse's body is built up from multiple layers of color, creating depth. I love the way Album applies watercolor like they're almost drawing, with these really expressive, visible marks. The triangle she's holding – a simple, almost childlike shape, is rendered with such precision in dark ink. This program reminds me a little of Red Grooms, with the playful, cartoonish take on figuration. It's a sweet piece, and it captures the energy of live music. Art isn’t about getting it ‘right’ – it’s about exploring different possibilities.
