Zobop (installation view) 1999

Editor: This is an image of Jim Lambie's "Zobop," a site-specific installation from 1999. It's, well, a whole lot of colorful vinyl tape covering the floor in a geometric pattern. My first thought is it's incredibly disorienting but in a playful, almost musical way. What am I supposed to see here? Curator: Disorienting is the perfect word. It tickles the eye, doesn't it? I think what Lambie is doing here is remixing the everyday. He’s using something so banal – vinyl tape – and turning architecture inside out. It’s a visual echo of a jazz riff, all about improvisation within a defined structure. Editor: Jazz, I like that! Does the space itself inform the piece? I mean, would "Zobop" look different in another setting? Curator: Absolutely. “Zobop” dances with its environment. It creeps around pillars, it changes our perception. It is utterly reliant and responsive to the room's geometry. Imagine it in a plain white box – it would lose its mojo, I think. It responds and becomes unique because of the space it's put in. Almost like a band. Editor: So, it's like the artwork becomes another layer of architecture itself? Curator: Precisely! It hijacks the existing space and hands it back to us, reimagined. And does this hijacking give it the freedom to then take over our imagination too? I wonder. Editor: It definitely messes with your head a bit, makes you reconsider what you thought you knew about the space. I appreciate art that nudges you to question your perceptions.
