Takeuchi Kimiaki’s platter is made out of glazed stoneware, and it looks like the clay was spun around on a wheel. I like to imagine it was made in one sitting, or maybe over the course of a few days, with the artist feeling his way through the process. The colors are really interesting, this blend of white, brown, black and green. The glaze looks like it dripped and ran in certain areas, creating these really cool, unpredictable textures. I am curious about what the artist was thinking when he made it, and whether he intended for it to be functional, or simply an object to look at. The darker section makes me think of Barnett Newman. But really, all artists are in conversation with each other, referencing and responding to each other's work across time. It's a never-ending dialogue. Ultimately, this platter embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations. There's no single, definitive meaning here, just an open invitation to experience the work.
