Oleg Holosiy made "Travel (Spring quotation book - 1)", and its dominant gestural marks and colour palette invite us to dive into an imagined scene which has emerged through trial, error, and intuition. The artist has sympathy for the scene, imagining what it might have been like to create it. What might they have been thinking when they made it? The texture, colour and surface contribute to the emotional and intellectual resonances of the work. I like to imagine that the paint is thick here, really built up to give a sense of depth and movement, like the scene is alive. The creatures are painted with such dynamism, communicating feeling and intention, suggesting how this piece relates to the artist's wider practice and body of work, perhaps echoing the approach of other figurative painters. Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is a form of embodied expression embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
