Oleg Holosiy made this 100 x 120 cm oil painting, "By the fountain," sometime before 1993, and it's like diving into a dream. The palette is muted, almost nocturnal, full of dark greens and murky browns, but then bam! There's this explosion of golden light near the fountain, highlighting the figure as if it’s a beacon. The way Holosiy handles the paint is so interesting; loose, gestural strokes blend into each other, creating this hazy, almost out-of-focus effect. Look closely at the figure by the fountain. It's not sharply defined, but rather emerges from the darkness, like a memory or a fleeting thought. The whole painting feels like a stage set, with figures appearing and disappearing in the shadows. It reminds me of some of the later works by Gerhard Richter, where images dissolve into abstraction, questioning the very act of seeing and representation. It's a painting that invites you to linger, to let your imagination wander in its ambiguous depths.
