Carrie Graber created "Glass Slivers" with what looks like oil paint, and I'm just imagining the patience it took. I wonder if this artwork started with a feeling of quiet or loneliness. It feels like I'm looking at a view of Los Angeles, with these slivers of light and the faint outline of mountains, from a luxurious room. The whole painting is built on subtle color relationships; pinks and oranges of the dusk blend into the cool aqua of the pool and the beige and tan of the architecture. I imagine her carefully layering the paint to create a feeling of warmth, luxury, and maybe even just a little melancholy. It's like she's inviting us to sit by the pool, watch the sunset, and think about all the things that make up a city. What I like about it is the artist really gets you thinking about painting, architecture, and the kind of quiet, thoughtful conversation they can bring about.
