Carrie Graber, born in 1975, made this painting called Dusk and Good Company at some point, but I don't know when. It's awash in the honeyed light of a setting sun that gives the interior of the room a yellow glow. I imagine her, Carrie, peering, squinting through the light, trying to capture the scene and the feel. She must have been mixing those shades of honey and umber and seeing how the paint responds on the canvas. I wonder what she was thinking as she decided on the arrangement? A couple visible outside through the glass wall, the cool interior, a modern fireplace. It reminds me a little of Wayne Thiebaud's style. But is it a memory? Or is it staged? Or is it real life? That sense of mystery is what keeps me looking. It's like Carrie is in a conversation with so many artists across time, each inspiring the other’s creativity. It makes you wonder what she'll paint next.
