Chris Ofili, a British artist of Nigerian descent, made 'Afrodizzia (2nd Version)' using a variety of materials, including glitter, paint, and, in line with his signature style, elephant dung. Ofili came into prominence during the 1990s amidst debates around cultural identity and representation. 'Afrodizzia' is rich with visual references to his Nigerian heritage and the broader African diaspora. Ofili’s work often challenges Western art history, drawing from both high and low culture to create new artistic languages. The references to popular culture, combined with the use of materials like glitter, creates a complex, layered effect that merges the sacred with the profane. Embedded in the swirling colors and patterns, you might notice images of Black individuals, integrated into the composition in such a way that their presence feels both celebratory and contemplative. This work is an exploration of Black identity, sensuality, and spirituality. It stands as an affirmation of cultural pride and a challenge to stereotypical representations.
