Joseph Fagnani painted Calliope, the Greek muse of epic poetry, in the 19th century. She is depicted with a scroll, representing the written word, and a trumpet, symbolizing the proclamation of poetic verses. These symbols evoke the classical world but are also repurposed in Fagnani's era. We see Calliope, a figure rooted in ancient Greece, re-emerging in the art of the 1800s. Compare this to Botticelli’s Venus, who embodies classical beauty, but in a Renaissance vision. The cyclical return of classical motifs speaks to a deep-seated human desire to reconnect with a perceived golden age. This longing, perhaps a subconscious yearning for order and harmony, drives artists across centuries to reimagine and reinvent figures like Calliope, each time imbuing them with the anxieties and aspirations of their own age. In Calliope’s serene gaze we might discern a reflection of our own quest for inspiration.
