This photograph of Else Wachenheimer-Moos, in the school uniform of the huishoudschool in Bexhill-on-Sea, England, was taken in 1913 by an unknown artist. It’s one of those muted toned photographs that just breathes with the quiet of another time. I love the way the artist captured these young girls sitting on the grass. There’s a sense of stillness, yet you know there's some rustling in the bushes behind them. The photograph is mostly monochromatic, all browns and creams. It has that vintage feel. The light is kind of hazy, creating soft edges. The texture is smooth, but you can almost feel the grass under their skirts. I think this piece shares something with the work of artists like Alice Neel, in that it tells a story about the people and their place in time. Art is always a conversation, right? It keeps on going, generation after generation, leaving us with more questions than answers.
