Curator: The Harvard Art Museums hold this sketch by Stuart Davis called "Planal Relations Diagram". Editor: It looks almost like a musical score… a minimalist, earthy tune waiting to be played. Curator: Davis was very interested in how abstract shapes could still convey the energy and rhythm of modern life. He saw the American city as a jazz composition of color and form. Editor: You know, I can almost see the city in this diagram. The empty rectangles, the buildings, or spaces in between... like a syncopated rhythm. Curator: It is a glimpse into his creative process. This drawing is an example of how he distilled visual experience into abstract form. Editor: For me, it’s like the bones of a song... you get the structure, but the feeling comes from somewhere else. It is so exciting. Curator: Indeed. These diagrams really highlight his commitment to revealing the underlying architecture of his work. Editor: So, next time I'm in the city, I should remember that I can turn it into music in my own mind. Curator: Well said. Thanks for sharing that.
