Ivan Generalic gave us "Rose Horse" and a snow covered hill, and a woman having a cup of tea, all made with oil paint. It feels like a dreamscape, or perhaps a page from a favorite fairytale. The paint application is super smooth, almost like glass. It is as if everything is being viewed through a frosted filter, muting the colors while still allowing their vibrance to shine through. There's such a stillness in the scene, except for the rose horse. Is it walking away, or towards the woman? Maybe it is simply wandering through her thoughts, she seems lost in them. The dark purple and green sky feels like a precursor to bad weather, or maybe it is symbolic of a larger emotional state. Like a naive art Mark Rothko, the artist presents a dichotomy between the foreground and background that feels both exciting and unsettling. The rose horse trots on, unconcerned.
