This image of Kasteeltoren van het Huis Bergh was made by Monumentenzorg. Look at the way they’ve framed this shot. They weren’t interested in the whole castle, just the tower. I can imagine them standing there, trying to get the light just right, maybe waiting for a cloud to pass. The way the light falls on the brickwork of the tower gives it such a sense of volume and weight, doesn’t it? It feels solid and permanent, like it’s been standing there for centuries. Which it probably has! It’s funny how a simple photograph can communicate so much. It’s like a conversation between the photographer and the building, and now we’re invited to join in. I wonder what they were thinking when they took this shot? What did the tower mean to them? And what does it mean to you? We, as artists, are always trying to communicate something about the world, about ourselves. And it’s so cool to see how that conversation continues across time and space, isn’t it?
