This photograph, made by an anonymous photographer, captures a section of the Huis Bergh in 's Heerenberg. The sepia tones give the image a feeling of distance, of something past, seen through memory. The weathered texture of the stone walls and the meticulous rows of roof tiles really stand out. Look at how the light catches on the rough surface of the wall, it's uneven and worn, telling a story of time passing, of seasons changing. There's a contrast there between the rough wall and the ordered roof, which feels kind of like a conversation about control and chaos. I’m thinking of Eugène Atget, wandering around Paris with his camera, documenting the city before it changed forever. It’s like this photograph does the same, preserving a moment and hinting at the stories held within those walls. Art, whether it’s painting or photography, is always about holding onto something, even as it slips away.
