This anonymous photograph titled, Leprozenkolonie Danaradja: strandtaferelen en ossenkar, presents multiple photographic images with sepia tones. You can see the artist carefully arranging each snapshot, creating a composition of images. I imagine the artist in the darkroom, developing these images. How they were thinking about capturing the beach scene and the oxcart. What was it like to live in that leper colony? What was the weather like? How did they feel in this situation, documenting the local scenes? The artist has arranged three photographs carefully. There is a tenderness here, in the way the artist allows each snapshot to hold a unique space while creating a unified composition. I think about other artists who have created works using found photographs and collage. It reminds me of the work of John Stezaker, appropriating existing imagery, disrupting and reconfiguring it to create new meanings. This work allows for a conversation between artists and artworks across time. It's a real exchange of ideas, inspiring creativity.
