"Gezicht op de Latijnse School te Amsterdam", or View of the Latin School in Amsterdam, is an etching made by Hermanus Petrus Schouten. Amsterdam in the 18th century was a global center of commerce and intellectual exchange, but access to education and opportunity was far from equitable. Schouten, who was born into a changing world, dedicated much of his artistic expression to capturing scenes of everyday life. The Latin School was an institution that prepared young men, primarily from affluent families, for leadership roles in society, politics, and the church. Notice the composition with its formal and rigid architectural lines that give way to the organic presence of trees and human figures. What stories do the students here hold? What dreams? This etching is a visual record of a particular time, place, and social structure. In his depiction of a place of learning, Schouten subtly invites us to consider questions of privilege, access, and the shaping of future leaders.
