This is Degen van Mr Ch. J. M.A. van Rooy, gouverneur van Limburg. We don't know who made it or exactly when, but it's the kind of thing that exists when somebody important wants to show off. It's interesting when a weapon becomes an artwork, right? The hilt and handle are all curlicues and pearlescent inlays. It's an object, but also a signifier of status. I guess that's true for most things of value. But imagine the person who designed this. How did they think about making something that was both deadly and beautiful? You see that point, how sharp it is. Think about how this object could hurt, and how it could protect. All those swirling forms seem to be trying to distract from the blade's simple intention. Maybe that contrast is the point? Like art itself, it's both about seeing and thinking, and it reflects power structures throughout time.
