This is sketchbook XIII with 25 pages, created by Isaac Israels, a Dutch painter known for his depictions of urban life and the working class at the turn of the 20th century. Israels, who moved from a more traditional approach towards Impressionism, had a keen eye for everyday life. His work often focused on capturing fleeting moments and the atmosphere of his surroundings. This sketchbook, filled with preliminary sketches, offers an intimate glimpse into his artistic process. Israels was deeply engaged with the social realities of his time. Coming from a privileged background, he used his art to portray the lives of ordinary people, including working-class women. His images provide insight into the societal structures and the individual stories of those often overlooked in mainstream narratives. The artist's personal experiences, combined with his social awareness, shaped his vision. This sketchbook is a tangible record of that journey, inviting us to reflect on the intersections of art, identity, and society.
