This chalk drawing by Cornelis Vreedenburgh is like a ghost of an image, hanging on by a thread. It’s faint, like a half-remembered dream. I imagine Vreedenburgh hunched over the paper, smudging and layering the chalk to build up these wispy forms. You can almost feel the pressure of his hand, the gritty texture of the chalk, the way the image emerged slowly from the blank surface. Look at the build up of chalk on the left, soft and textured and full of atmosphere. It’s a sketch, a study, maybe even a failed drawing that has been repurposed. But it still holds something interesting – a sense of mystery, a hint of a landscape lurking beneath the surface. The emptiness to the right only adds to this effect. I think of other artists, like Agnes Martin, who have used faint lines and subtle textures to create these subtle moods. It’s all about the conversation between artists and the way they pick up on each other's ideas. It’s not about answers, but about asking questions and playing with possibilities.
