This is ‘Toneeldecor: De Behangen Kamer,’ rendered by Jan Punt with etching, sometime in the 18th century, now held at the Rijksmuseum. Note the spinning wheel. In the 18th century, spinning wheels were ubiquitous, but they also carried symbolic weight, often representing domesticity. Yet, like the ancient Fates spinning the threads of destiny, these wheels can appear in different contexts and carry darker connotations, indicating fate and the passage of time. Observe its presence here, in what is seemingly a lighthearted scene. Think of it as a 'fortuna rota', a wheel of fortune, if you will. Has fortune run out on one of the characters, or are the characters’ fates intertwined? The spinning wheel evokes deep-seated anxieties about life's unpredictable nature. Consider how this simple tool evolves, carrying our collective memories and fears across generations, constantly reshaped by the human psyche.
