This fashion plate, “Art - Goût - Beauté”, was made anonymously in January 1924. I can almost feel the artist’s hand moving across the page, delicately rendering the fabrics and figures. It’s so stylish. Imagine being an artist in the 1920s, tasked with capturing the essence of Parisian haute couture! How do you convey the movement and texture of these garments? Maybe the artist was experimenting with thin washes of colour to mimic the transparency of the crepe Georgine. The colours are muted, yet the overall effect is radiant! I’m drawn to the way the figures are posed, each one seemingly caught in a moment of contemplation. The artist’s deliberate lines and careful attention to detail remind me of the work of other illustrators from this era. It’s all part of an ongoing visual conversation about line, form, and beauty. Even today, we continue to draw inspiration from the past, reimagining and reinterpreting these ideas in our own work.
