Curatorial notes
This fashion plate, "Art - Goût - Beauté," from January 1924, it’s probably made with stencils and pochoir. Look at the way the colours are laid down. I love to think about how the image came to be! The colour palette of this illustration is so restrained, but also lush, it reminds me of Vuillard or Bonnard. See how flat the colours are in the clothing of the figures, but they are so carefully chosen to create an overall sensation of style and glamour. That dark gown on the left is so interesting, a black ground decorated with shapes, leaves, and berries, with an almost folk quality! It sets the tone for all the other garments on display: a red cape is bold against the neutral background, a white shift is cool and modern. There’s such a dialogue between the graphic elements and the hand-painted touches! It’s like a conversation between abstraction and representation, high art and commercial art. The piece makes me think about how art is always evolving, borrowing, and transforming.
