Jesus 1810 - 1873

Wilhelm Marstrand created this drawing, "Jesus," using pen and gray ink on paper, now held at the SMK. The figure of Jesus dominates the composition, rendered with a striking interplay of light and shadow that models the drapery and the figure's form. Marstrand uses line and wash to convey both solidity and a sense of ethereal grace. The use of monochromatic tones directs our attention to the contrast between textures and the play of folds in the fabric, lending a sculptural quality to the drawing. The seemingly unfinished quality, especially in the rendering of the figure's feet and the empty background, invites us to contemplate the state of becoming, rather than a static representation. This work reflects the artist's academic training and the influence of classical ideals, yet the dynamic brushwork introduces a tension between established form and subjective expression. This tension opens up the work to re-interpretation, moving beyond traditional iconography.
