Dimensions 12 x 12 in. (30.48 x 30.48 cm) (approx.)

This small, square, handwoven upholstery fabric was made by someone at the Cranbrook Art Museum. Can you imagine the maker sitting at the loom, patiently interlacing each thread? This little patch is like a microcosm of a larger world, where every tiny movement and decision accumulates to form a whole. I love how the olive green is shot through with glimmers of gold, almost like sunlight filtering through leaves. It's got this subtle, earthy vibe that feels both comforting and luxurious. It's easy to imagine this textile as part of a chair or a cushion, adding texture and warmth to a domestic interior. It reminds me how the act of weaving – like painting – involves layering and building, bringing form and structure to something out of separate strands. It is the maker's equivalent of a painterly mark, solidifying their gesture into being. Textiles like this, paintings like mine, and the countless artworks around us, are ongoing conversations across time, inspiring creativity.
