Jean-Baptiste Madou created this image of a group playing cards around a table. The symbolism of playing cards stretches far back, initially a pastime for royalty, they became a mirror reflecting human fate, where chance and skill intertwine, much like life itself. The arrangement of figures around the table, some engrossed, others observing, brings to mind the Last Supper. Here, the communal act of playing cards becomes a stage for human drama, a theatre of ambition, deceit, and camaraderie. Even the innocent-looking child and the dog introduce an interesting tension, and recall the ever-present motifs of innocence and loyalty. The symbols of card games have an uncanny habit of resurfacing and evolving, weaving through our cultural consciousness, reminding us of the cyclical nature of fortune and the timeless human pursuit of understanding our fate.
