This small print, ‘Apollo (Sol) met sterrenbeeld Leeuw’, was created by Sebald Beham sometime between 1500 and 1550. A dominant feature is its intricate composition, rendered in delicate lines that create a dense and visually rich surface. At first glance, we see the figure of Apollo, identified with Sol, the sun, standing beside the constellation Leo. What is striking is how Beham uses the formal elements to merge classical and astrological themes. Apollo is not depicted in idealized form, but rather as a figure with a palpable, almost earthy presence. Holding the sun like a mask, the contrast between the radiant face and Apollo’s more human features raises questions about identity and representation. The dense cross-hatching and fine lines create a textured surface that invites close inspection. Beham destabilizes classical ideals, hinting at the complex interplay between celestial symbols, human identity, and earthly existence.
